Encouraging every child to shine

Dosbarth Melyn - Mrs Evans

Welcome to Dosbarth Melyn

We are a highly qualified, committed and enthusiastic team who provide the best possible learning and experiences for our lovely children.

Our learners have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and are at the heart of all that we do.

Autism is a spectrum.

This means that everybody with autism is different.

In our class, the characteristics of autism vary from one child to another. Staff support the children with social interaction, social imagination, communication, sensory needs and behaviour.

All staff encourage every child to shine by providing fun, engaging and exciting learning experiences. The children have access to our class sensory room, soft-play area and the sensory garden. As well as learning within the school grounds, we also explore the local community of Ammanford.

All children have speech and language targets, personalised “steps to shine” targets and we track progress using B-squared.

Our classroom daily routines focus on developing communication, life-skills and independence.

Our Curriculum

Creating ambitious, capable learners, ready to learn throughout their lives. Our goal for learners is to help them become as independent as possible when performing day-to-day tasks like expressing their likes and dislikes, completing learning activities, and interacting with their peers.

Enterprising, creative contributors, ready to play a full part in life and work. We work on developing functional life skills for our learners by providing them with practical real-life scenarios.

Ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the world. It is important for us in Canolfan Yr Enfys to have a sense of belonging within the school community as well as experiences with Welsh culture and heritage. We teach our students that their actions have an impact on the wider world.

Healthy, confident individuals, ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society. We promote a healthy lifestyle, physical activity and healthy eating. All children have the opportunity to engage with new, exciting experiences such as bike ability, swimming and RDA horse riding lessons.

We cover the following areas of learning and experience:

  • Expressive Arts
  • Health and Well-being
  • Humanities
  • Languages, Literacy and Communication
  • Mathematics
  • Science and Technology

It is paramount that our learners are able to communicate their wants, needs and desires in their chosen form of communication.

We promote a total approach to communication. This includes speaking, signing, objects of reference, widgit symbols, Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) and photographs.

We employ a variety of specialist teaching and communication strategies to support our pupils learning.

These include:

  • Picture Exchange Communication (PECS)
  • Social Stories
  • Attention Autism
  • Intensive Interaction
  • TAC PAC
  • Sensory stories
  • Sensory circuits
  • Story massage
  • Daily sensory stations
  • TEACCH approach

All teachers and assistants receive the appropriate training to ensure the best possible outcomes for our pupils.

Communication with parents is paramount and we like to share our learning experiences via class dojo. We use ClassDojo to keep everyone up-to date and more recently, parents are able to view their child’s individual portfolio of learning.
